Isn't a wet pump something that if it does fail, could destroy the internals of your engine? I am assuming it uses engine oil, I know nothing about them.  At least a dry pump doesn't cost you an engine overhaul.

a wet vacuum pump is VERY reliable compared to the dry pumps.

you made a leap there.
There are a variety of factors that can take out your primary PFD, only one of which is lightning.
...and these are things you can't do much about other than fly VFR.
The original question was, if you are going to have a backup, what kind of backup is preferred.

I don't have the parachute yet.  sorry.

So do all of you guys who are saying those without spinning mass backups are "dead men walking" have all of the following safety features in their planes:

- Active traffic system
- Satellite weather
- Active terrain avoidance
- De-icing system
- Halon fire extinguisher for the engine compartment
- Airframe parachute (RDD has installed one in an ES-P and can do the same in any IV or ES)

I can go on and on.  Flying is a series of measured risks.  I find it hard to believe there have been more fatal accidents resulting from planes getting hit by lightning while in IMC than by mid-air collisions, inadvertent flight into bad weather, CFIT, engine fires, airframe mechanical issues, or icing.  Unless you have installed every available safety system on your plane, then I think you need to tone down the certainty and authority of your opinion.

As some famous person once said, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.
