The reason why is just slightly beyond my ability to describe...in any event, their grey code output to the transponder works fine. RMI is sending out a new chip to me this week with an additional format which is fully compatible with the SL70 for serial data transfer. However, the SL70 is not yet smart enough to pick only the altitude data from the stream and pass along the rest to your GPS. You can send the grey code output from the MicroEncoder to the transponder and use the encoder's serial port to send serial data directly to the GPS...I suppose this might be considered a workaround.
