As an old A&P IA I have noticed owner maintenance on these items to be less than proper in many cases. The axle nut must be tight, as noted a few days ago. Torque on a good bearing will not cause damage. A loose bearing will self destruct. Don't be afraid to torque your axle nut. After all play is gone go to the next cotter key slot. Always clean your brake pad backing plates with a wire brush prior to riveting on new pads. Thoroughly clean the calipers. The sliders and their "holes" should also be clean and smooth. If there is excessive play here, replace the plate mounted on the axle and/or the pins. Lubricate pins and slider holes with nickel base anti-sieze paste to prevent rust and to facilitate brake release. Clattering is not normal and should be investigated. A good set of wheels and brakes will only rarely make noise during taxi. If you still have trouble see your local A&P. It is much cheaper than a trip into the grass or a light! Walter Dodson 1895740IA ps: See if the brake line or hose is putting a twist onto the caliper... that will wear your pads unevenly. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LML website: http://www.olsusa.com/Users/Mkaye/maillist.html LML Builders' Bookstore: http://www.buildersbooks.com/lancair Please send your photos and drawings to marvkaye@olsusa.com. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
