I always replace the supplied access panels with
ones cut from a 4 bid carbon layup. First, this allows the screw locations
to be relocated slightly as I've found that the ones as drilled in the aluminum
covers closest to the stab are too close making it difficult to install
nutplates and awkward to use a screwdriver. Second, the carbon plates make
it easier to do the bodywork necessary for a good fit and finish.
Absolutely no problem countersinking #8 screws into plates that are the same
thickness as the joggle. See attached photo.
