Some of the mods made to the ES mount are not compatible with a retractable
nose gear and TSIO. The cross tube between the two front engine mount
rings with a diagonal tube is really the most solid way to construct the front
of the mount, but a straight tube won't work on the TSIO. I know at least
one guy who had a curved or trapezoidal cross brace that worked with the
TSIO.
The new version of the ES mount has flat plates on the top, forward
diagonal, and forward surface, bridging between the left and right bearing block
plates. I don't think you can do that with the retractable nose gear
mechanism.
When I dealt with my cracked mount, I talked to Lancair and they
recommended removing the mount and sending it back to them to be modified with
the gussets and flat plates. The advantage is it would be done with the
mount in the jig so no distortion will develop. They had also built a
complete IV mount out of heavier tubing for a guy who'd broken two previous
mounts. My cracked mount was from a severe shimmy when the damping in my
old style nose strut failed.

Colyn,
I
wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that new mounts are bad and I don’t have any
contacts who would weld a custom mount for a price that anybody would think
was reasonable.

Craig,
It sounds as if the quality of the new mounts is
questionable? How would you go about getting a really solid mount
built?
