Michael,
About 3 years ago I was in Redmond at RDD getting
deice installed when the observant RDD personnel saw that the engine mount paint
was wrinkled. After a closer look it was concluded that both sides of the
engine mount were cracked. RDD had the Lancair welder come over and take a
look. He said pull it over to Lancair up to the shop and he would reweld
it for a fifth of the most expensive booze I have ever seen. He sand
blasted the two areas, reached over on a shelf and picked up two premade gussets
and proceeded to weld. In about 30 minutes it was done and was told that
if that cracked again I would have done something that caused a much bigger
problem. The tig welds look fantastic. He knew what he was
doing. I did pay the shop rate to Lancair in addition to the
booze.
The bottom line is "yes" by all means install
gussets. And if it is possible I would travel to Oregon to get Lancair to
do the repair. It might be cheaper in the long run. If nothing else
have Lancair send you the gussets to be installed. I am sure there is no
part number for the gussets but twist someone's arm to talk to their
welder. I can't remember his name. If you get someone locally to do
it they MUST be good with tig since the welds are not exactly in the most
convenient places. Replacing the engine mount would be a real
bear!!
Yell if I can help.
