Michael,

About 3 years ago I was in Redmond at = RDD getting=20 deice installed when the observant RDD personnel saw that the engine = mount paint=20 was wrinkled.  After a closer look it was concluded that both sides = of the=20 engine mount were cracked.  RDD had the Lancair welder come over = and take a=20 look.  He said pull it over to Lancair up to the shop and he would = reweld=20 it for a fifth of the most expensive booze I have ever seen.  He = sand=20 blasted the two areas, reached over on a shelf and picked up two premade = gussets=20 and proceeded to weld.  In about 30 minutes it was done and was = told that=20 if that cracked again I would have done something that caused a much = bigger=20 problem.  The tig welds look fantastic.  He knew what he was=20 doing.  I did pay the shop rate to Lancair in addition to the=20 booze.

The bottom line is "yes" by all means = install=20 gussets.  And if it is possible I would travel to Oregon to get = Lancair to=20 do the repair.  It might be cheaper in the long run.  If = nothing else=20 have Lancair send you the gussets to be installed.  I am sure there = is no=20 part number for the gussets but twist someone's arm to talk to their=20 welder.  I can't remember his name.  If you get someone = locally to do=20 it they MUST be good with tig since the welds are not exactly in the = most=20 convenient places.  Replacing the engine mount would be a real=20 bear!!
