I would like to pose a question to the experienced pilots/ builders on this
list. I am a depositor on a Legacy kit. I have no building experience. My
question is this: Which engine option (Cont. 550, Lyc. 360 turbo normalized
or other) would you choose for this aircraft. I can see pros and cons to
both. My A&P is a real fan of the venerable Lyc. 360. However I'm not sure I
want to deal with a turbocharger and possible cooling problems. The Cont.
550 installation seems to have great performance but the extra weight, fuel
consumption and questionable reliability are a concern. Are these the
factors I should be concerned about? Are there other factors that I should
consider? A 300mph cruise speed is a tempting proposition but if I end up
with a single seat airplane that has no range, I know I won't be happy. The
factory numbers suggest that this airframe should handle a 300hp mill and
still be a "usable" aircraft. I am a little skeptical and would like to hear
some opinions and experiences from the "real" world. Thanks in advance for
your help.
