HEADLINE: Ore. small  plane crash  kills pilot, dog survives

The  crash  of a small homemade  plane  south of Portland, Ore., killed the pilot but authorities say the man's dog survived.

Clackamas County sheriff's spokesman Jim Strovink said the  plane crashed  and burned Monday at a tree farm near Lenhardt  Airpark  in a rural area.

The pilot has been identified as 68-year-old William E.C. Kennedy III of Portland.

The sheriff's spokesman says Kennedy was accompanied by his Australian shepherd dog, Charlie. The dog ran from the burning debris to a nearby elementary school, the Ninety-One School, where faculty members found him scared, with singed fur and smelling of smoke.

Strovink says Deputy Nicholas Adler accompanied a chaplain to the Kennedy home to inform relatives of the crash and bring Charlie home.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
