Hey
LML gang,
It’s
been pointed out to me, by someone more knowledgeable on the subject of EAA
awards, that Russell’s award this year is a Bronze Lindy – the same
as the other Legacy winners at Oshkosh in the past. Having never seen an
actual trophy until seeing Russell’s trophy photo, I thought that nick
name would be on the inscription -- so I thought maybe it was a higher level of
recognition. It turns out one know it’s a “Bronze Lindy”
because of the color of the guy on top…J (See photo below) I assume that’s a young Charles
Lindbergh – seems like it would better to be Paul Poberezny –
anyway, I digress…
For
anyone else that’s curious, this clarification prompted me to look more
into the details of the EAA’s recognition award system. Here are
the EAA sponsored homebuilt aircraft award categories – an excerpt from
Official EAA Judging Standards Manual.
Seeing
the table above one can also see the nick names and formal names for the awards.
I know that Champion Homebuilt/Bronze Lindy awards are a really big deal since
I’ve seen a lot of excellently built airplanes that haven’t yet received
EAA recognition.
Congratulations
to all the EAA award winners, past and present – it’s quite an
honor.

Subject: [LML] Russell Steiner Legacy Oshkosh 2010 Champion Kit Built
Award!
A
big congratulations to Russell Steiner and his Lancair Legacy that just won
Champion Kit Built Airplane Award at Oshkosh AirVenture 2010! I think
this might be the highest EAA recognition award ever received by a Lancair
Legacy. Here are a few photos of Russell’s outstanding Legacy.
