I've posted this report before, but here's an update after four
years. Everyone knows that getting acetone on the Legacy's canopy or side
windows will damage them. When I installed the side windows, I had small
pieces of scrap plastic (acrylic?) from trimming the windows to size. Out
of curiosity, I dunked one of the scraps in acetone for a minute or two and
then set it in a windowsill. Here's a photo after four years:
I looked at it closely and could see no evidence of damage. No
crazing, no cracking, nothing, except that the felt pen label had faded.
I want to make it clear that I'm not saying that it's okay to intentionally
expose the canopy or side windows to acetone, but if you happen to accidentally
splash a drop or two, or if an assistant grabs the wrong rag, it's probably not
the end of the world. My sample has sat in the sun for years, which is a
fairly harsh test, but it is not physically stressed. This may or may not
apply to our canopies and side windows.
Best,
Dennis
