Ouch.  That hurts to see.
Did the over-centerlink fail or just fold up?
Go with alloy steel though, stainless has about the same yield strength as 6061T6 aluminum.

gear overcenter link - especially at the mid point.
 
 Otherwise, you too can make pretty colored stripes on runways and get to make
