Bill,
The fairing extensions were added after Lancair went to one piece main gear doors. The fairing only needs to stick out from the side of the fuselage enough to allow the gear hole to stay on the bottom of the plane. If you have not already built you main gear doors you need to get them to the point to where you can determine how much of the fairing you will need to add to the door to make it large enough for the tire. This dictates where the fairing need to be positioned. The main gear door should e as flat as possible.  

Don't forget to make sure the tire is full of air.
