Product Improvement Notice

Subject: Landing Gear Forks

Date:      March 1, 2010

The Legacy RG aluminum main landing gear fork is designed for normal use, up to nominal expected gross weight on smooth runways. Aluminum was chosen for the fork in keeping with the Legacy’s emphasis on light weight and performance. Variations in runway surface, aircraft weight, tire choice, and pilot technique can, in some cases, allow for the normal flex in the fork to permit contact between the tire tread surface and the head of the bolts securing the fork to the shock strut.  If you are experiencing this condition it can be addressed in two ways.

Option 1:

You may change the fork attach bolts from the originally supplied hex head bolts to a countersunk bolt. Lancair will supply the necessary hardware needed to make the change at no charge. To modify the fork, you should use a 5/16 pilot 100° countersink until head is flush (nominally .133 deep). This change will increase clearance between the standard tire and the fork by .375” and will also provide a smooth surface on the fork’s inside surface to eliminate tire tread grooving.

Hardware to be supplied:           8 x AN960-516 washers

                                                            8 x MS21042-5 nuts

                                                            8 x MS24694-S156 screws

                                                            2 x MS24665-292 cotter pins

Option 2:

You may elect to replace the aluminum fork with a stiffer steel fork, incurring an increased aircraft weight of 7.5 pounds. The stiffer steel forks flex less and may be secured with the original style AN5-14A hex head bolts. The steel forks, pn# 433-0010 and 433-0011, may be purchased from Kit Components Inc. at a net cost of $374 each (exchange), including shipping. The new forks will come to you ready to install with new bolts, nuts and washers, and axle cotter pin. The charge will be $1496, which includes a $748 core charge. The $748 core charge will be refunded to you upon receipt of your aluminum forks when received at Lancair. You are responsible for shipping costs of returned aluminum forks. Aluminum forks must be received within 45 days after steel forks are shipped for refund.

It is the responsibility of the owner to check all clearances and fit before flying.
