Wayne was the pilot of the Raven, but the cause of the accident was a mechanical failure that forced the prop into Beta. Almost every other pilot in the world would have done the wrong thing and been killed. Handley did exactly what he was supposed to do in the few seconds he had to make a decision. He flew the airplane all the way and hit the ground at max angle of attack and under control. Hence, he luckily survived. (He is a few inches shorter now!)
