I think the easiest way to tell them apart is by the flange that attaches to the fork.  The old strut has a gold anodized collar and the new strut doesn't have a collar.  It a solid polished metal piece that's integral to the tube.
 
I replaced my strut with the new style after a severe shimmy incident that cracked the engine mount on my ES.
