The first ones I tried were rubber coated over the socket and while these worked, I had to cut them down for clearance. The other ones I have you just pop the cover and they fit. I've been using xD cards exclusively now for over a year and a half at least. No matter which way you go, I would not consider yourself to be in good shape until you own maybe 6 working cards. you're going to want your system working good for many years, and even 6 cards can be damaged pretty easily. So if you want any hope of continuing Database upgrades, or being able to set limits, definitely stock up on cards. There are SM cards on eBay now, for reasonable prices again, but not large cards. xD cards went from being plentiful to being much harder to come by too...in the smaller sizes. Some IDU-3's I understand can only handle up to 64Mb cards. IDU-1's can handle 8-128Mb cards. Larger cards are useless for this task. I find 64Mb to be the best deal, because some log files can get near 10Mb, and with 5 recent logs available, you may need 50+ mb just to download logs. So I use 64/128Mb cards for downloading logs and stocked up on 16/32Mb cards for doing routine things like database upgrades. Also, regarding the gold contacts, the manual is written around IDU-3's and I think those use contacts UP, whereas the IDU-1's use contacts DOWN. So that is why there is confusion. As for the adapters....this adapter is the kind that I've found to work (although I can't guarantee that this one is identical). http://cgi.ebay.com/XD-to-SMC-SmartMedia-Smart-Media-Memory-Card-Adapter_W0QQitemZ320420732741QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item4a9a905f45&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Auction item: 320420732741 Those use a plastic shell...and you see the lines vertical on the picture. The other ones are more square and are a molded rubber....don't get that kind. This is an example of a BAD one: http://cgi.ebay.com/xD-To-SMC-Adapter-Xtreme-to-Smart-Media-Card_W0QQitemZ350252923188QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item518cb37934&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Hopefully that helps.
