John, It's very easy to "fry" these cards. inserting or removing them
with power applied to the system is a common/popular way! L It appears they can be damaged by other means as well, as
I've lost two over the past year, and have been very careful! I expect that's one reason they never became a popular standard? Ref
Chelton Installation Manual 64-000038, Page 71 of 172. I've been able to find these on ebay from time to time;
that's the best source I have. I am down to two cards now, and am considering a conversion to the mini-xD card. Some folks have
modified a "tray" that duplicates the SmartMedia card interface and holds the mini-xD card. Seems you need to modify the "tray" a
bit by grinding on it so it will fit into the slot in the Chelton screen, but you might check the older LML posts re this?
If you buy SmartMedia cards via ebay or other, consider going for the 32 or 64 MB chips. 16 MB is
marginal for the newest Chelton data loads, and I had some trouble.so no longer use them. The Chelton will take 64 MB cards; I have
not tested larger capacity cards. One other note. You need to load updated nav data into all Chelton
screens; it does not automatically exchange this with multi-screen systems. My CPU #1 (PFD) will normally go into the data/menu
functions just by inserting a "readable" card and then turning on the power, but I must also hold down the "fast erect" button
during power up to cause CPU #2 (MFD) to go into this mode. This was passed to me by another Chelton owner; the above
installation manual does not mention this requirement in the set up/configuration instructions starting on page 71, but does note
this requirement as step 4.1.2/4.1.3 on page 140. Give this a try; it works for me. Hope this
helps! Bob P
