Chelton SmartMedia Card and setting system limits
Hi John,
Make sure you are inserting the memory card into the slot with the gold
contacts forward and facing down. Some of the instructions say
incorrectly to have the gold contacts up. Make sure the card slides all
the way into the Chelton so that it is not protruding at all.
If you have a two screen system, does the card work in screen #2?
I assume you're already doing that, which means the card is probably
bad. The card that came with my system was bad, too. You might try
reformatting it to see if that fixes it (it didn't fix mine). I bought new
cards from Olympus online; I don't know if they still sell them or not.
You might search eBay. Chelton may sell new cards, too. As a last
resort, the http://cheltonefispilots.com/
website has instructions for replacing the older SM card reader with newer
technology.
If all else fails, you might try connecting a computer keyboard to the
Chelton and working from that. But you'll still likely want to have
functioning memory cards to allow updating the Jeppesen navigation and obstacle
data every month for IFR flight and downloading your data file after each flight
to save on your home computer's hard disk. There's a wealth of information
there and it's a shame not to save it.
Good luck,
Dennis
