I had a problem with power to my Chelton system last year when climbing out through a 5000' foot thick layer. My D10A back up was easy to fly and it got me on top at 6000'. I know Brent Reagan recommends a spinning mass to back up a solid state system but this worked fine for me in this case.

BTW- the problem was power to the air data computer resulted in erronuous airspeed, altitude, R0C and FPI indications. A somewhat unexpected but logical failure mode.

Why not get a Dynon D10A or its new cheaper sibling as a back-up?  It has integrated backup battery for I think 2 hours, plus altitude and airspeed, all in one relatively small device.
