John,
If you buy the yaw dampener for your IV-P with winglets, you are wasting your money - my personal opinion. Our IV-P is very stable in the yaw axis with the winglets. I got about 25 hours in a friend of mine's IV-P without winglets before I flew ours. The difference is amazing between the two airplanes. In his airplane, you had to continually "dance" with the rudder to keep it going straight, but ours is totally different. I'm not saying you don't have to use our rudder, but much less! If you really want a yaw dampener, I'll sell you my servo, with the box, for half price! <grin>
As a side note, my friend that did our first flight, mentioned how stable our airplane was in the yaw axis during the debrief, so I'm positive it is not something I imagined!

" Question, will it function without the Yaw Damper box they now sell for
$2500? Is it powerful enough for the IVP? Is it necessary - will the
aircraft be reasonably stable in Yaw at altitude (flight levels?) and other
flight regimes?"
