Judging from the latest postings about poor customer service from
Performance Engines, I want to pass along
that I received good support from them.
I have a Performance Engines IO-550 in my Legacy, now with 235 tach hours
of trouble fee flight. I have
8.7 to 1 forged pistons, a single Lightspeed electronic ignition and one
magneto.
When I first received my engine, the oil filler cap was too difficult (for
my hands, at least) to open and close
because of the nearby air intake pipes. It was a smooth cap
without a "blade" on the top. I emailed Stuart,
who told me to send it back, which I did. It came back promptly, with
no charge to me, with a blade welded to
the cap.
See the photo below:
However, it didn't seal as well as I thought it should. The dipstick
was a flat steel bar and as it bent and twisted
to get down into the oil pan, it torqued the dipstick so that it tried
to unscrew the cap. I again whined to Stuart, who
said that Continental had a new style, with a flexible steel
cable instead of a flat steel bar, and that I should send
mine back to Performance Engines and they would swap it out. Again,
they did and there was no charge to me.
The photo above is the final one, and it works as advertised.
Maybe I was lucky; I don't know, but they treated me right.
Best,
Dennis
