Hi Josh,
Yes Josh, I do not want to be a HPAT instructor-- Just a FAA ATP CFII who just happens to have trained several (Hundred) Lancair pilots.
Not a Lancair inspector--- Just a FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative-- A$P who just happens to have built/inspected/certified/
several Lancairs.
-----------------------
A premium of $12,000 changes quite a few things. I will not be carrying many passengers. I will be trying to limit my exposure.
And, it changes a insurance company mandate for Lancair specific training from HPAT. And maintenance inspections from Tim Wilson.
Also, if this is a typical insurance premium, it will push most Lancair owners into a self-insured posture. I do know some business owners who would carry hull insurance no matter what it costs because they are able to deduct it from their taxes. Not in my case.
People should be able to go to whomever they feel is best qualified. Some will choose HPAT--and some will call Jeff or Charlie. This is still America, and we believe in the free market. Right?
I personally believe that the FAA's credentials are sufficient. To inspect, a (DAR/IA or A&P). To train, a (CFI/ CFII). I believe the insurance companies/Lancair are unreasonably adding to the FAA's requirements.
Additional controls and regulations are not needed. However, if they were -- I believe that they should come from the FAA and not from those who have a financial interest.
But, to clarify where I stand in regards to a relationship with Lancair and with HPAT--
I believe in standardization. If you believe a procedure that I am teaching varies from the HPAT's profile, please let me know and I will modify my procedure as applicable. And I will do likewise.
In regards to the maintenance inspection, I will be taking a larger number of pictures and making a record on a CD of each aircraft.
If Tim Wilson or others in Lancair's maintenance area will make notes and publish service bulletins regularly, we will all be alert for these deficiencies.
An example; you mentioned // that an engine with two electronic ignition's would not be insurable??// Do you have a service bulletin that advises that to the builder/inspector?
Wouldn't it be better to have a accurate and complete service bulletin system that would enable the builder/inspector to comply with these items rather than having a single inspector (T. W.) having this knowledge in his head and inspecting all the aircraft as he is able?
I will be happy to cooperate and contribute to a safer pilot group and fleet of aircraft.
Charlie K.
