In general my experience has been there is no effect on antenna performance from metallic paint. However, we do strive to only apply the minimal thickness of paint (for weight reasons). I would also point out that one man's expectation (especially in a kitplane) does not always equal the next guys... For example, there are a lot of folks flying around with wingtip mounted nav antennas in their IVP's that are satisfied with range/performance while others would opt for the external tail mounted cat whisker style. Keep in mind also there are many different additives in paint and it is often possible to obtain a desired "look" without the use of aluminum powder, eliminating the potential altogether.
