If it's truly a mechanical hang and the starter
solenoid really is open then the starter shouldn't be able to drive current back
onto the main electrical bus. However, if you have diodes or transient
voltage suppressors on the starter solenoid, depending on how they're configured
they may provide a path for current, depending on how much voltage the starter
generates. It may just burn out the diode or TVS, which could
generate some smoke. In any event a mechanical hang isn't good for the
starter.
