No... The line connecting the fittings does not go on each cylinder as
shown and there should be no need to machine the rack.
Where is your shop? Are you near Michigan? Want to see a HYD and main
gear system that is completed?

  I realized some of my prose was less than lucid. The line connecting
the fittings goes on each cylinder as shown, not between two cylinders.
Also, the through bolt sleeves actually press against a pinion plate and
they clamp the grease block between them. The shim is needed to get
clearance between the plates and the rack. If I had a surface grinder or
milling machine it'd be better to take the rack down instead. The pinion
gear has
.014 clearance as it is and the spacers match the grease block
