hello
The TCM starter adaptors are stressed by the permanent magnet motors, like the Iskra brand and others.
The permanent magnet motors have high starting torque and more importantly do not relax after being de-enegized. The start adaptor needs to be able to unwind a bit to totally disengage.
Aircraft Specialties Services found it was being blamed for warranty problems that they knew was not their fault. So they made a cutaway starter adaptor and made video of the mechanism on a running engine.

I also had to replace the starter drive adapter on my IO-550 (non turbo)
after about 50 hours. In my installation we only had to loosen the bolts
holding the engine, not pull the engine.
I have heard from a number of people about starter drive adapter problems -
I think it is fairly common. In talking with Allen Barrett of Barrett
Precision Engines about this problem, he said that not all starters are
equal with respect to causing this problem.
I would be interested in hearing from him what the data suggest about which
are the best and worst starters with respect to the starter drive adapter.

Dan,
I had the pleasure of replacing this after the first 50 hours of flying on
my Legacy. Even though the engine had to come off, it wasn't as bad as I
thought it would be. We first removed the bolts holding the starter on,
and then removed the 4 bolts holding the engine. With the engine swinging
form the hoist, we were able to remove the starter without taking the
engine completely off. Actually only took an hour or so.

Has anyone ever replaced a starter adapter drive on a TSIO550? (this has
the turbo scavenger pump on the back of it)
I currently have the problem of the starter motor running but the prop not
turning past a compression stroke. I am told that the whole assembly has
to come off the back of the engine and the shaft and spring replaced or
rebuilt. The problem I have on the IV is the distance from the back of
the shaft to the firewall is only 2 or 3 inches. I don't think this is
enough room to slide the assembly out. Will the engine have to be moved
forward to remove this assembly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
