John,
This does NOT provide accurate horizon information. See http://www.i-hud.com/ The iPhone has accelerometers that do not act like a gyro. For example, it will show level in a coordinated turn. Here's an excerpt from the web site:
iHUD offers a fantastic way to teach, see, and learn EFIS and partially AHRS on-the-fly. Important note: A limitation of this basic version of iHUD is that the horizon depends on the on-board accelerometers only. This means that the horizon does not display the earth horizon as a reference of a vehicle in an accelerated attitude. It will display the acceleration of the vehicle only. Therefore, never ever use this version of iHUD for in-flight operations to visualize attitude other than pitch and roll. We are currently studying the possibility to mathematically model an algorithm to address this situation.

Has anyone seen this application for the iPhone 3G? I lurk on the RV Digest
and heard about it there. The 3G has a GPS receiver as well as
accelerometers for use as an auto map navigator. Someone devised an
application that converts the iPhone to an attitude indicator/DG. The
application sells for $5.99. Yep, that's right. Of course you have to have
the phone and I hear it's several hundred bucks.
Obviously, it's not approved for use in an airplane, but what if you carried
it just for an additional backup behind your glass panel, your steam gauges
and your portable G496? Anybody used it yet? Does it provide enough real
information to save your bacon in a pinch?
