Valin,

I had the same quandary when installing my HID lights.  What I wound up doing was modifying the Lancair wing lights.  First I made them significantly smaller, then I bonded the lens in place and faired it into the wing.  The light was mounted on a flange that is attached to 2 studs bonded in place in the wing.  This way, with the removal of 2 nuts, the entire assembly comes out of the access plates under the wing.  I am on vacation this week, but can send some pictures next week.  I installed 2 50W HID light and a pulse circuit, have been told it really looks impressive form the outside.  Lights came from xevision.com, which have been great people to work with.

There are 2 issues that I foresee with this installation:
1.  The HID lights, while very focused, still reflect some off of the prop arc.  Not an issue during the day, but noticeable at night.  I toyed with the position of the light for a while to mitigate this as best as possible.
2.  The lens is bonded is place, so any damage would have to be fixed in place.  Worse case scenario is a cracked lens, probably would have to break the lens completely out, replace, and then blend paint back to it.

Hey LML gang,

I’d really like to have our Legacy’s landing lights in the wing, rather than just mounted on the landing gear, for the significant collision avoidance mitigation it provides – according to USAF studies.  The easiest place to put them is in the Legacy’s stub wing section because the shape there is so simple and there’s plenty of space.  The problem I have with that location is that it will be very difficult to do it so cleanly that it doesn’t trip turbulent flow very early along the chord of this laminar flow wing -- with significant drag increase...

So, I’d really like to get our landing lights in the wing tips.  I’ve finally found some nice, low profile HID lights that are small enough to fit in the Legacy’s wing tips.  The biggest challenge is the thermo-forming of the clear acrylic lens with the more complex shape of the wing tips…

I really don’t wan’t to add yet another mod development to our Legacy project.  Has anyone else already done this for landing lights in the Legacy’s wing tips?  Does anyone know of a shop with reasonable prices for forming acrylic like this?

Thanks,

Valin
