About a year ago I helped a friend with a 430 to 430W upgrade on his Legacy.  As I recall the upgrade included a new, higher gain, antenna.  We mounted it in the same place as his original antenna; i.e. inside the wingtip.  It's mounted on an aluminum plate that is attached to the inside of the wingtip access panel and bent so that it places the antenna near the upper surface of the wingtip skin.  This was done primarily to provide room for the TNC connector.  His 430W is working nicely.
