Have you ever done it for real?

Yes, I've done it for real. However I was a couple of miles away from my airport when the engine quit. I'd never had an engine failure before and didn't know for certain that it wasn't putting out some power (it quit windmilling as I slowed from my glide speed, so at that point it was obviously not working). It was my first flight in my just finished Lancair 320. I was more bothered by not knowing the handling characteristics of the plane than by the engine problem. I was about two minutes into my first flight and hadn't even done a stall series yet. Anyway, I made an uneventful landing, fixed the problem and continued the checkout. I didn't trust the plane for about ten hours. You couldn't get me out of gliding distance from the field for a while.

But, have I done it from 200'? Never -- couldn't do it. Have I done it from 500'? Only in practice, but I know I could. More important, I know I can safely maneuver the aircraft, with or without power, to take advantage of whatever the situation offers.
