Bryan,

I've got only the internal lip based on recommendations of other builders.
I think the predominant airflow is out along these seams.  This causes an
expansion of the canopy along the seam.  I have the gray seal embedded in
the canopy which rests on the rails.  Overall the internal lip with the gray
seal keeps out leaks.  

By removing your external lip you'll get a nice line to match the header
tank.  However, my cowl split sat higher than the header seam.  Thus, I have
a convenient stripe in my paint that edges both seams nicely.

On the other hand, the stripe also transitions the canopy which required a
lot of painting effort.
