When I bought the airplane, I did several hours of flying with an instructor in San Diego (where the airplane was built). We, of course, did several gear extension tests by lowering the dump valve and letting the gear freefall. The mains never locked down the first time. It always took a little "ruddering" (new word) to get the gear down and locked with 3 green. Of course that will be tough to do with the airplane on jacks. Not sure if the mains should freefall without swinging it around a bit, but mine won't without, and never failed to do it with...
