Its not bad if the safety wire is removed, a couple of paper towels
are placed under the filter to catch later drips, the filter is loosened and a
gallon sized ziploc bag is slipped onto (under) the filter.
Further turning and removal catches excess oil in the bag and the paper towel
gets the few drips from the adapter. Oh, and wear rectal examination
gloves to keep the oily mess off your hands. You could wear a tux if it is
done this way (a la James Bond).
Try this and see if it actually resolves the original purpose for
installation.
