I've helped install headset jacks in a Legacy
overhead console; the standard jacks and Bose jacks wired in parallel. The
wires can be glued behind the rollover structure and then
covered. Or you can drill a hole in the rollover structure, where it
will be covered by the console, and fish the wires through the rollover.
If you're going this route fish the wires through without any attachments on
them. One potential down side to mounting the jacks in the overhead
console is the headset cords can get in the way when accessing the baggage
compartment. Of course all you have to do is unplug them when getting at
the baggage compartment, but if you don't feel like plugging and unplugging
cords there are other options.
Another mounting location I've worked
with is to mount the jacks behind the seats at the top of the
seatback, in the corners near the rear windows. I've seen a variety
of simple mounting brackets fabricated from fiberglass for the jack
mounting. Some of the brackets have had the jacks mounted in the side
so the plugs go in horizontally, some have mounted the jacks on the top
surface so the plugs go in vertically.
You could mount them in the panel, but panel
space can be scarce on a Legacy and I think the headset
cords can be more in the way when mounted there. On
the up side you don't have to fish wires through the console or rollover and
it's easy to check that your headset plugs are fully seated when in
flight.
