It smoothes out any transient = "bumps" in hydraulic pressure. Also, it keeps the pump from cycling on = and off as the pressure bleeds down normally or changes with = temperature. It should have come from the factory with the nitrogen = "pre-charge" already loaded. Generally, the accumulator should not = require any further service.
