Hi Joe,

This may not contribute much, since my project is Lancair kit #11, resurrected 2 years ago.  Stripped out the steam gage, vacuum,  and wiring.
Changed to BandC alternator and standby 8a... wanted a modified Nuckolls #13 dual electrical system.

Bought dual GRT EFIS, Digiflight II, a Bendix navcom, Garmin transponder and 396, FastStack hub, and asked Lancair for a quote... remote from Illinois; visited L in OR and saw what you do.
Frankly what I wanted to do looked very difficult, being electronically challenged, and I would have to make scaled sketches of the plane as-is, and so on, for you to do the wiring harnass, adn don't know how you would test everything.
Next I sent a panel sketch, and got a quote ... $13k, labor, not incl. components.
Seemed high... but I have no experience.

I could see all kinds of problems, trying to do it with L shop there and the plane in Illinois.

Finally by the grace of God found a retired avionics pro.
I mounted all the components.
He flew his RV here from OK, stayed with us, and wired a thousand wires.  I was his gofer.  Next I had to do some mechanical things, and he came back a second time to finish the job.  Everything works ... so far.   There were a few minor programming loose ends for some of the EFIS functions, that I may have to have my man return for.
The cost so far, not including components, is less than $2k.
Had this man not emerged, I would have gladly paid air fare and expenses to have a pro come from Lancair to do this job, which I am incapable of doing, even with the FastStack hub.  Avionics has a long way to go before it becomes plug and play even as simple/complex as our computers. Too many optional functikons by gear from different manufacturers.  It's a wonder to me that it works as welll as it does.  Lots of talent at work there.

You might consider offering a service with per diem travel, etc.  It worked for us. I would have been pleased to pay two or three times as much as I did, to get the job done.

Thanks for your concern and straightforwardness in the way you run Lancair.
Hope this info helps.

OK everyone, I'm looking for input from those of you who may have gone to
avionics shops other than Lancair's. What were the reasons for you going
outside of Lancair for purchased of your instrument panel. What can Lancair
Avionics do to be more competitive in our own market? I invite you to respond
to joeb@lancair.com
