From reading recent posts on over-use of brakes, it seems that this is a
common thing among new Lancair flyers.  I am a member of the same club.  My
first set of tires (mains) lasted about 8 months with a few flat spots on
them.  My second set lasted 5 years so far and are about ready to be
replaced now.  Suggest that you guys who are about ready to fly, learn from
our experience.

Initially, it was very difficult for me to get a feel for the proper brake
pressure.  I think it has something to do with the angle of the rudder
pedals relative to the legs.  Or maybe its just lack of flexibility in a
pair of aging ankles.  Anyway, the procedure that works for me is to remove
my shoes which enables me to know exactly where my foot is on the pedal.
During landing, I keep my feet low on the pedal (off the brake) to insure
that I do not apply brakes until I'm ready.  When I need to brake (which is
as little as possible) I move my feet up on the rudder pedals.

Happy Flying & Building
