Erik: I think I was a few miles ahead of you flying south yesterday at
11.5k, returning to Chino from Marysville in N94PT (Lancair IV), at least I
think
I remember your N-number as we switched freqs for flight following.
On Friday pm as I climbed out of Chino to 12.5 my oil temp topped at 220dF
too. That was about 20dF higher than normal, likely because it was indeed a
hot day. Since I was worried I might get to the fly-in before the field
opened I idled along at about 50% power so the oil temp soon dropped below
190dF.
However if it had remained at or below 220dF I would not have been
concerned. Of course less is better, but with quality oil on ISA + 30 days
I think
cruise at 220dF is OK--especially if your engine is relatively new and still
tight. Mine is a Performance TSIO-550 with only 100 hrs and I expect the
oil
temp to drop 10 -20 dF during the next 100 hrs, at least that is my
experience
with other new engines.
My advise: fly more and worry less...
