Nice job and thankfully little damage.
The interesting thing about these problems is that they feed
on themselves. The alternator is the perfect setup. Once the connection starts to go bad, the arcing and rubbing
increase the resistance, that increases the power and on and on.
The alternator is happy to supply current at a higher voltage
and the regulator (inside the firewall) is happy to make it so
as long as it sees 12 V where it is. Your avionics are happy
cause they have 12V.
Any typical connection the resistance increase would cause
the powerd device to malfunction, in most cases before
there was enough power to burn anything.

On straight-in for my home airport, about two miles out, smoke started
swirling around in the cockpit.
