The interesting thing about these problems is that they feed on themselves. The alternator is the perfect setup. Once the connection starts to go bad, the arcing and rubbing increase the resistance, that increases the power and on and on. The alternator is happy to supply current at a higher voltage and the regulator (inside the firewall) is happy to make it so as long as it sees 12 V where it is. Your avionics are happy cause they have 12V. Any typical connection the resistance increase would cause the powerd device to malfunction, in most cases before there was enough power to burn anything.
