Also, I couldn't tell from your description if you verified the box = end of the cable doesn't move. Maybe disconnecting the cable = completely and securing the selector on the box would tell you = something.     no clue.  but = you might=20 learn something by disconnecting the hot side and solidly stopping up = that port=20 to the mixer box. Possible outcomes:
a) thwap goes away.   = something that=20 depends on hot-side pressure.
b) pressure drop with no temp change = after the=20 thwap.   something in the box
c) no change. something in the cool = side outside=20 the box.
 
    Also, I couldn't = tell from your=20 description if you verified the box end of the cable doesn't = move.  =20 Maybe disconnecting the cable completely and securing the selector on = the box=20 would tell you something.
