John, Thank you for the reply. I talked with Larry Vetterman some months ago. He came highly recommended by another RV builder, but it appears he only does exhausts for RVs. I have attached two photos that show the difference between our sumps. It looks as if you have more space between the inlet pipes as they enter the inlet plenum. And your inlet pipes look as though they mate with the plenum through hoses with hose clamps. Mine plug in with an O ring seal inside the plenum casting. There's no way you can fit an exhaust pipe between the two inlet pipes for cylinders 2 and 4 on the right side, and the exhaust builder did a great job of getting the exhaust pipe crom cylinder #2 in as close as possible. I think the RV cowl may be larger than the Lancair's. I'll follow up with the sticky backed aluminum foil. Thanks! Regards, Chris. """ The plenum and sump are about $2k and made of magnesium, nice pieces. The exhaust was $700. There is plenty of room between the intake pipes, and the exhaust fits tightly against the bottom of the plenum. """
[Better than just sticky-backed aluminum foil is Zetex, the insulated metallized fabric that they fabricate welders' and foundry-workers' gloves from. The only problem is that in order to buy direct from the manufacturer you need to buy in volume. One of the guys put together a group purchase several years ago, and it's entirely likely that some of the folks who ordered it may have enough left over in scraps to cover what you need... the areas requiring protection inside an LNC2 cowl simply aren't that large. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask and include the measurements of the areas required in your query. <Marv>
