Yes, this is a potential water trap.  I have drilled drain holes in the
bottom of my gear.  Every annual, when I disassemble, inspect and clean
the gear I squirt LPS3 in every direction through the upper holes.
Excess slowly escapes out the drain hole over the following few weeks.
