Just to underscore the testing of Bob Mackey, for those of
you in SoCal, try a power-off landing on Santa Paula's, 4-22, 2650 X 60, pattern
altitude of 600' AGL; I do it all the time! 'Course, like Bob, my Lancair 235
has a low-drag, high-pitch, fixed-pitch prop, so its glide-ratio is pretty good.
But even with a CS, I would think you could compensate for the higher prop drag
by shortening your pattern. 'Seems to me that would be like having
spoilers! Just chop power opposite the approach end and fly it on down. The
Shuttle can do it! Can't you? Weren't any of you taught in Cubs like
me?
