perhaps the Grand Canyon et al.

I suggest any of the northern National Parks. We have done many of the parks in the West in winter and have had wonderful experiences. If you camp, bring your warm gear. If you don't, find the parks with nice lodges open in winter, or that have nearby B&B's. (And yes, we have done the Grand Canyon in winter. It was beautiful, uncrowded, and easy. The lodge has nice suites if you reserve ahead, and the airport is convenient.) Contact me off-line if you want to hear more.
