Very interesting. Since the hyrdraulic fluid will seek out the path of least resistance during retraction, I suspect some undo intermittent restriction or drag load coming from somewhere else in the system. In other words, the nose gear retract problem may caused by an issue in a completely different part of the hydraulic system. If the nose gear moved first, then it was easier to retract then the mains which, of course, should not be the case given even just one gas spring. If you physically blocked the main gear from retracting you would expect a rapid retraction of the nose gear. Then let the mains go and the nose gear would fall out again as you describe.
