I have the Bill Maddox speed brakes, and once I started flying after they sat for years waiting, they were slow to retract under the force of wind over the wing. He advise to "burn in the clutch" meaning run them up and keep the button pressed, run them down and keep the switch pressed, until the oil on the disc and the clutch get a bit more grabby. He recommended an hour of this, but a half hour of continuous (gruelingly boring) running seemed effective.
But my problem was only their disinterest in coming down when commanded during flight speeds over 150 KIAS.

I have the bill maddox speed brakes also, the darn
things never worked well, Bill is not servicing them
and the guy that built the controller was available
2-3 years ago when I sent them the entire brakes and
the box, he swore to me that the system was aok and
when re installed the same problem it comes out
intermittently, it gets stuck and multiple resets are
needed to make them come out. all in all unusable. I
believe its an electrical evil thing that lives inside
and I cant get rid of it. We replace the switch in the
stick and it did not change the problem. If you find a
solution please share. I am ready to replace them with
something better.
