Jim,
I agree with you on this subject. Macho has no place in the cockpit of
these aircraft. I file IFR most everywhere I fly -- today I went St. Louis -
Atlanta and back to St. Louis. My wife is a pilot but she is also my wife
and so I let her know what my travel plans are and if I am late she worries. Her
sister introduced her to flightaware.com so now she can track my progress as I
traverse the country. Keeps her happy and if she is happy everyone is happy. If
I go VFR for a local trip/ traiing, etc. she know what aircraft, where I am
going and what time I will be back.
I also carry an EPIB that I purchased at OSK last year-- it is registered
with Coast Guard so that if it goes off they know who to call and most
importantly exactly where to look. Beats treading water all night.
Bryan Burr's comments on the Cirrus crash are right on target. Rulan
Gardner and his buddies are extremely lucky to be alive.
