Reminds me of a great book I read some years ago called "From The Jaws of Victory".
Another fun book along those same lines is "The Wrong Stuff: Flying on the Edge of Disaster". It was written by a former Navy test pilot and has some truly amazing anecdotes. (It's available from Amazon, probably other sites as well.) The one that really got me was a set of tests where the pilot intentionally landed a Grumman F9F, gear up, on a rubber deck.
